Holt not expecting England call
Norwich striker Grant Holt notched his 10th Premier League goal yesterday as Norwich almost secured a draw gainst Champions Manchester United. However, despite having the second best goals tally of English strikers in the top division, the striker is not holding out for an England call-up.
Darren Bent was famously omitted from the World Cup squad in 2006 despite being the Premier Leagues’ top English goal-scorer, and whilst Holt needs another 7 to catch up with Wayne Rooney, he expects a similar fate.
Holt joined Norwich for £400,000 from Shrewsbury and has been instrumental in Norwich’s back-to-back promotions securing Premier League football at Carrow Road. He claims to now be in his peak physical condition, citing that he feels fitter and stronger than ever. Whilst his performances have not earned an international call-up, they have not gone unnoticed and cash-strapped Glasgow Rangers bid for Holt’s services in January, but Paul Lambert was never tempted to part with the forward.
Lambert has suggested that the reason his top players are overlooked when it comes to international squads is because Norwich may not be ‘fashionable enough’. Lambert, however, is in no doubt that Holt’s performances merit a place in the squad.
