Redknapp urges chairman to keep Adebayor

adebayor 150x103 Redknapp urges chairman to keep AdebayorTottenham boss Harry Redknapp has urged chairman Daniel Levy to put up enough money to keep Emmanuel Adebayor at White Hart Lane.

Adebayor arrived on a season-long loan from Manchester City last summer and the former Arsenal striker quickly won over the supporters.

The Togo Striker has been in superb form for Spurs this term and his nine Premier League goals have helped guide the North London club to within touching distance of leaders Manchester City.

Adebayor has already stressed that he has never been happier in England than he now is with Tottenham, but when asked whether financial issues could be an obstacle to him remaining on a long-term basis, he said: “We all play football to get money. I’m from Africa and I have to give something back to my community. I will keep doing this until the end of my career.

“I’ll leave it to Harry Redknapp, Daniel Levy and (City chairman) Khaldoon Al Mubarak to find a solution among themselves. For me, what is important is to enjoy myself on the pitch.”

Adebayor is contracted to Manchester City until 2014 and earns £170,000 a week, with Tottenham currently paying £70,000 and City the remaining £100,000 despite not having played for them since last December.

Spurs wage structure has a £70,000 a week ceiling and it is difficult to see how Adebayor could remain at White Hart Lane without accepting a significant pay cut.

Redknapp however is anxious to keep him beyond this season and hopes Daniel Levy can find a solution.

‘We like him. He has done well for us, worked hard, not been a minute’s problem.

‘If you want to keep the best players, we must find a way of doing a deal that’s near to what they can earn elsewhere.

‘We’re not in a position to pay £40million or £200k a week, we don’t do it.

‘The chairman Daniel Levy doesn’t run it like that and rightly so.’
