Newcastle destroy Manchester United
Newcastle United ran out 3 – 0 winners against Manchester United last night at the Sports Direct Arena, with goals from Ba, Cabaye and an own goal from Phil Jones in injury time, sealing a brilliant result for Alan Pardew’s men.
Manchester United who surprisingly lost 3 – 2 to Blackburn at Old Trafford on New Year’s Eve, were expected to come out of the traps flying and keep the pressure up on neighbours and title rivals Manchester City, who went three points clear the night before, thanks to their 3 – 0 demolition of Liverpool.
However, it was Newcastle United who continued their impressive run of form in the Premiership with a result that sees them consolidate 7th place in the table on 33 points.
Striker Demba Ba scored the opener on the 33rd minute, rifling in his 15th goal of the season, to ensure that the Toon Army went in at half time 1 – 0 up, much to the delight of the majority of the 52,000 capacity crowd in attendance.
Newcastle’s lead was doubled within minutes of the game restarting, when Yohan Cabaye scored from a 30 yard free kick.
Manchester United, saw Wayne Rooney have a shot blocked on the line and Berbatov also saw his header hit the post. But it was to be another bad night at the office for Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United, with Phil Jones knocking in an own goal at the death.
The result leaves Manchester United 3 points behind leaders Manchester City, who they face at the weekend in the FA Cup Third Round.
