McLeish calls on action against Van Persie
Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish has called on the Football Association to investigate an incident between Arsenal‘s Robin van Persie and Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar, during yesterday’s FA Cup 4th Round match at The Emirates. A game in which Arsenal came from behind to win 3 – 2.
McLeish is of the view that the challenge in the 64th minute was a clear elbow by Van Persie, although the incident in question went unpunished by the match official.
Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, McLeish said:
“It was a clear elbow. Would I like the FA to look at it? Yes. Look at my nose, it is a result of elbows all my career. It is something which is dangerous. But the referee did not seem to think there was anything in it. I never mentioned it to the referee. I saw it in real time. I don’t like to point the finger at players, but it has happened to mine enough times.”
Should the FA investigate the incident and subsequently find wrong doing on Van Persie’s part, the Dutch international could have to serve a suspension.
