Liverpool in £10m bid for Defoe

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is preparing a £10million bid for Tottenham’s unsettled striker Jermain Defoe according to both the Daily Mail and Mirror.

Dalglish is looking to take advantage of Harry Redknapp’s pursuit of Marseille forward Loic Remy in an effort to breathe new life into his attack this month after Liverpool’s stuttering form sees them in seventh place and five points away from a top four finish.

Remy is joint third top scorer in Ligue 1 this season after finding the net 6 times in thirteen appearances and has helped guide Marseille into the last 16 of the Champions League after finishing second to Arsenal in the group stage.

Despite the French sides surprise qualification for the knockout stage of the Champions League, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has already began negotiations with Marseille and Redknapp was at Marseille’s Ligue 1 clash against Lille on Sunday night to see Loic Remy score both goals in a 2-0 victory.

If Redknapp does bring in a new face up front, Defoe would be pushed further down the pecking order and nearer the White Hart Lane exit.

Defoe is believed to be frustrated by his lack of starts this season, and with Van der Vaart and Emmanuel Adebayor Redknapp’s first choice, Dalglish may swoop as he looks to add some much needed firepower to reignite his side’s challenge for a top-four finish.

Liverpool were held to a seventh home draw of the season on Saturday by Stoke City and with Luis Suarez serving an eight-match ban and Andy Carroll struggling to live up to his £35m price tag, the Reds are finding goals hard to come by.

Defoe is a proven Premier League goalscorer and has already netted seven times in 15 league games despite the majority of appearances coming from the subs bench.

The 29 year old hotshot needs game time to force his way into Fabio Capello’s plans for Euro 2012 and the move could benefit all parties.
