Chelsea should play to Torres’s strengths

torres 150x101 Chelsea should play to Torress strengthsThe signing of Fernando Torres by Chelsea in January 2011 for a British transfer record of £50 million from Liverpool, caused a great stir of anticipation amongst the Stamford Bridge faithful, but as of yet, based on goals scored alone, the transfer has not justified the hefty price tag involved.

To put it bluntly, Torres has had a torrid time at Chelsea thus far and for a striker who is based on his goal return, on the surface at least, it looks like the acquisition of Torres by Chelsea was a very costly mistake.

However, it is quite clear for those who have had the chance to see the Spaniard up close this season, that Torres himself at least is looking close to top form again. A fact that belies the goal return of 3 Premiership goals in 30 matches.

Last week against Sunderland, for anyone watching the game, Torres was the star performer. Indeed, when I was at Stamford Bridge the previous week for the game against Portsmouth in the FA Cup, I spent a lot of the game watching Torres’s off the ball movement. His awareness of what is happening around him is second to none as is his positioning.

In Torres, Chelsea have a world class striker, so talk of finding a replacement for the ageing Drogba and recently departed Anelka is really a moot point. Instead Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas should make the Chelsea midfield play to Torres’s strengths.

They have a world class performer in Torres, a player that has been successful at Liverpool previously and in La Liga with Atletico Madrid, not forgetting a star performer for the World and European Champions Spain.

Instead of looking for the next big name striker, Chelsea should use the one currently on their books.

    100% correct. Torres needs a mid-fielder who could partner with him – feed him balls when Fernando is in a scoring position. We need mid-fielders and defenders. We have one of the best in the world striker and talented young Sturridge and Lukaku. We are fine in this department. I love the intelligence and the attitude of Torres. Skills? They are unparralelled

    Agree with you! Torres is still the best striker in Euro. The manager must faith on him. Chelsea fans will see his magic form in sooner! He will lift trophy for Chelsea. No doult!!!!!

    Chelsea should sign hazard to help bring out the best of toress. Just imagine the midfield of mata and hazard. Pls sign him for even 40 million i beg you.

    Eden Hazard could make the difference. Torres understands football on the ground than long rang passes which chelsea are used to. Midfield of Hazard and Mata could solve our problems and make Torres hit the top striker he is again.

    AVB should instruct his mid-fielder 2 feed Torres alwaz,he is a world class striker but dispose Drogba first so dat Torres will regain his confidence,pls get Hazard,Krasic,Kevin and d right full back 2 solve d defence problem

    I thank all of u for this post.Yes,chelsea need Hazard plus Mata in our midfield,how interesting.Also,we need a coplete winger,it doesnt pay using strikers in d position of winger.If this can be rectified,chelsea will beat any team i bet u.AVB,do this and u’ll relax in the end.Pls dont forget to sell Drogba else Torress wil never shine.
