Abramovich needs to allow Villas-Boas to manage Chelsea

abramovich 150x120 Abramovich needs to allow Villas Boas to manage ChelseaSince Roman Abramovich bought the controlling interest of Chelsea Football Club from Ken Bates in June 2003, his sole aim has been to establish the West London club as one of the dominant forces in European football, with the Champions League trophy the Russian’s primary goal and aim.

Abramovich has to date spent hundreds of millions of pounds from his own personal fortune to achive his ambition and has appointed seven managers so far, in the eight years since replacing Claudio Ranieri with the self proclaimed ‘Special One’ in Jose Mourinho in 2004.

Yet only seven months into his tenure as Chelsea boss, current incumbent Andre Villas-Boas who Chelsea paid Porto a reported £13 million in compensation, is finding his position as manager under threat.

This comes on the back of a so far mixed season, which has seen Chelsea lose at home to the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool in the Premier League and having to rely on winning their last Champions League  Group Stage match at Stamford Bridge against Valencia, to secure their passage to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

However, during the eight years Abramovich has been involved with Chelsea, they have only reached the Champions League Final the once and on that occasion lost out on penalties to Manchester United in 2008.

With reports doing the rounds that Villas-Boas’s position is now under threat with the shadow of favoured Guss Hiddink hovering above him, Abramovich would be wise to leave well alone.

Indeed if Abramovich had not let his personal disagreements with Jose Mourinho affect his decisions, Chelsea could well have already won the Champions League. Mourinho is arguably regarded by many Chelsea fans as the best manager the club have had during Abramovich’s ownership and many fans would still love to have him in charge at Stamford Bridge.

Likewise, Villas-Boas whilst young has started to carve out a great reputation in the game and must surely be allowed to rebuild and mould the Chelsea squad he has inherited, regardless where they finish in the Premier League this season, or how many or how few trophies they end up landing.

Continuing to chop and change their manager on the whim of their owner, is most likely the main reason as to why Chelsea have, as of yet, not achieved Abramovich’s main goal.

It will be interesting to see if Villas-Boas is given the time necessary to achieve what he is certainly more than capable of achieving in the Stamford Bridge hotseat.

  5. You hope the change AVB is attempting has been sanctioned by Roman and the board with the understanding the breaking up the old guard and reshaping to the depth necessary in this team will cost time, titles and money. It will also test the patience of Job, a trait Roman cannot relate to. The rot at CFC had gone on too long and it needs a root canal and jaw surgery to completely remove it and and slowly heal the infection. The purchases made so far indicate a sensitivity to the new UEFA rules and a desire to build in a reservoir of internal replacements. The un-Chelsea like loses and the bruising of egos ( players and management alike) that goes with this amount of change is so far proving to be too much for a young coach to handle. Does Roman understand this?
