Arsenal interested in Beck
Arsenal are reportedly ready to offer Hoffenheim £10.5million for defender Andreas Beck after reports in the Italian press of interest from Juventus scared Arsenal into action.
Despite refusing to pay what many would deem a reasonable price for Bolton Wanderer’s tried and tested centre-back Gary Cahill just a few months ago, remarkably Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is now considering an eight figure outlay on a relatively untested and equally inexperienced defender.
Except for a brief role in Stuttgart’s Bundesliga winning season, Beck has featured largely for 1899 Hoffenheim, a team recently promoted to the Bundesliga on the back of heavy investment which has remained largely a mid-table side throughout.
Arsenal are no doubt in need of a quality right-back, however, by the time the January transfer window opens, Bacary Sagna is likely to be back in training following a broken leg sustained against Tottenham. Beck, a specialist right-back, is unlikely to join Arsenal merely to warm the bench, especially as he has aspirations of making Germany’s Euro 2012 squad. Therefore, these reports add credence to the suggestions that Bacary Sagna could be one of Arsenal’s next big stars to leave the club.
